Chapter 1 A Single Step Kairi Summers stood in front of the gathered villagers, her knees practically knocking together beneath her ankle-length skirt in fear.   What was she going to tell them?  How was she going to break it to them?  As their weary faces stared at her, she could only think about the failure she had been all her life.  She clutched the red star crystal hanging around her neck, hoping beyond all hope that it would consume her in fire and burn her up so that she didn’t have to face these people, her employers.  Really, she couldn’t even open her mouth to speak. A nudge from her ally snapped her out of her trance.
